Any thoughts of the Jets salvaging their 2024 season became a pipe dream as soon as they threw away their Week 8 game against the low Patriots. But in case you were still hanging onto hope that the Jets could somehow get hot and go on a run, Sunday’s spectacular come-from-ahead loss to the Colts made the Jets’ fate clear to even the most positively delusional Jets fan.
It’s over. The Jets now have a less than 1% chance to make the playoffs according to The Athletic’s playoff prediction model. And with six games to play, the only thing to look forward to is seeing how high the Jets can climb toward the first overall pick in the NFL Draft (right now The Athletic’s model gives them a 4% chance at the No. 1 overall pick).
As the Jets head into their Week 12 bye week with a 3-8, they currently hold the No. 7 overall pick and are just one game back of the Jaguars for the first overall pick according to Tankathon. The problem is there are a lot of bad team’s between the Jets and the Jaguars and some winnable games for the Jets down the stretch.
None of the five teams two-win teams ahead of the Jets in the draft order won on Sunday: the Jaguars (2-9), Titans (2-8), Browns (2-8), and Raiders (2-8) all lost to drop another game under .500. And the Giants (already 2-8) were on a bye.
The Patriots also lost to join the Jets as the NFL’s only two teams at 3-8. But the Patriots have an easier strength of schedule than the Jets, which puts them ahead in the draft order per the NFL’s tie-breaking procedures.
Just behind the Jets at No. 8 are the 3-7 Panthers (who are wrapping up a bye week) and the Cowboys (3-6) who face the Texans on Monday night and no matter how they fare won’t finish this week with a lower win percentage than the Jets which locks the Jets in at the No. 7 pick for this week.
Of course, even if the Jets win out, which is highly unlikely considering they fall apart whenever winning a game would truly matter, they would finish with only nine wins and be far from a lock to make the playoffs. Hence their unenviable position at this stage of the season, firmly in no-man’s land.
